Few Random Finishes

Just a few random finishes, not really quilt related but they did help me get some fabric out of my stash.

First, I made a window seat cushion for my boyfriend’s daughter. I was able to get rid of a lot of leftover batting I have laying around as well as a few yards of fabric, so I’m very pleased about that. I also made her a matching pillow with Slytherin and black fabric:

Next, I made a pillowcase for my boyfriend, also Harry Potter themed but Hufflepuff this time:

I really love how it turned out and he loves it, too! I also made him a handkerchief for father’s day with some fabric I had in my stash. Also, I made my son a pillowcase using some hand-me-down fabric and a bit from my stash.

His bed is now fully Thomas the Tank Engine. He loves it!

I usually don’t do a lot of this kind of sewing so it was fun to finish a few little projects. I really enjoyed making the Hufflepuff pillowcase so I want to try and make more of those in the future.

I’m still plugging away at my to-do list:

  1. Quilt for baby boy 3: I’ve finished piecing the top of the “>Meet Cute Quilt. Now I need to choose a backing, quilt and bind!
  2. Quilt for C: I have decided on a pattern from a book.
  3. Quilt for baby girl 2: I’m making the Diagonal Strip Quilt from Cluck Cluck Sew
  4. Mike’s T-shirt quilt
  5. The Lattice quilt tutorial when I pre-ordered the ombre confetti jelly roll from V and Co.

Thanks for stopping by!

Day before Harry Potter

Not much going on today. I woke up a bit late and have been spending the day catching up on work. Tonight is the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 midnight release. Mike just went to go see if they have any tickets available. We didn’t plan very well I suppose :3 Talk about waiting until the last minute! I hope they have some. If not, that’s the beauty of working from home… we can take an extended lunch break and go to the first showing of the day tomorrow!

I want to see it, but I know I’m going to cry. I completely cried when I read the book (twice). And I’m really curious to see where they end this movie. I would think it might end right before Harry, Ron and Hermione decide to return to Hogwarts before the final battle. I think that would make sense.

Anyway, keep your fingers crossed for us! I hope we get to see it tonight!

Since when do I like YA?

For those of you not in the know, YA stands for “Young Adult” novels. You might know of a couple really popular ones, like Harry Potter and Twilight. I didn’t begin reading the Harry Potter series until after the sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince came out, and by that time I was long past being a “young adult,” in fact I was 20 years old. Two weeks later I had the entire series read and I couldn’t wait for the last book, Harry Potter and the Deathy Hallows to come out.

The same thing happened with Twilight, I didn’t start reading the series until the last book, Breaking Dawn came out. I saw the huge display inside a Borders store the day it came out, got curious and bought the first book. 5 days later I had the entire series read. I tend to get into things at the tail end of them 🙂

Since Twilight, I’ve been reading more YA novels at the recommendations of friends. First was Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games series, which I absolutely LOVED. Once I finished Catching Fire, I was disappointed to learn that the last book wouldn’t be published until August 24th of this year.

Next up was the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series, starting with The Lightening Thief, since the movie was due in theatres pretty soon. I was actually reading the books over my Anniversary vacation. I thought they were alright, but very Harry Potter-esque. I didn’t like them as much as I liked The Hunger Games & Catching Fire. And The Lightening Thief movie? Incredibly disappointing! Not faithful to the book at all (what is all this business about Persephone’s pearls?), tons of elements of the movie were completely made up when they didn’t need to be, the book was fine as it was.

Now I’m on to the His Dark Materials series, about 100 pages into The Golden Compass (or Northern Lights as it sometimes called). I never saw the movie, and apparently it wasn’t faithful to the book at all so I’m not planning on it. So far I’m really liking the book. It has a parallel universe to our own, much like The Hunger Games, and I’ve found that I enjoy those novels more.

Feel free to comment if you also enjoy YA novels and have some to recommend to me! 🙂
