To Do List 2019

This post is really for me to keep track of where I am in my never ending quilt list, but feel to join along with me! So when we last left off on my to do list we had the following:

  1. Quilt for C: This is the Connect Four quilt. FINISHED!
  2. Pillow case for ME from Zelda fabric. I’m crossing this off of my list because I don’t really want to make it any more!
  3. I still want to make Mike’s T-shirt quilt. I may make another t-shirt quilt first so I can practice on shirts that have less sentimental value to me before I risk making a mistake on these shirts.
  4. The Lattice quilt tutorial when I pre-ordered the ombre confetti jelly roll from V and Co.
  5. Singing the Blues by Moda Bake Shop
  6. Applique UFO. I actually have this pieced together and a sandwich made, but I think I’m going to put this on the back burner for now.
  7. Christmas UFO.
  8. Batik Flower Applique UFO.

Another family member has become pregnant so I’m adding another baby boy quilt to my list. Here’s my new list for 2019, in order of priority:

  1. Baby Boy Quilt (due May 2019). I have some fabric pre-cuts I think may work for this one.
  2. I still want to make Mike’s T-shirt quilt. I may make another t-shirt quilt first so I can practice on shirts that have less sentimental value to me before I risk making a mistake on these shirts.
  3. The Lattice quilt tutorial when I pre-ordered the ombre confetti jelly roll from V and Co.
  4. Singing the Blues by Moda Bake Shop
  5. Christmas UFO.
  6. Batik Flower Applique UFO.
  7. Applique UFO.

Carl’s Connect Four Quilt

Finally finished this quilt! I actually finished it back in November but my site has been down for about a month and a half and I just got it resolved. I started this quilt back in August as a gift for my fiance on our first anniversary. It is a pattern from the Country Girl Modern Book by Jo and Kelli Kramer at Jo’s Country Junction.

I used Kona Burgundy cotton for the background fabric at my fiance’s request. Various scraps from my stash were used for the little squares. My fiance is a huge Harry Potter fan so a lot of the scraps are Harry Potter themed. I tried not to use too many florals or feminine colors, since this is a quilt for a man, but the bulk of my quilting has been for women and children so this was a little difficult. I think I pulled it off, though!

The backing is actually an old sheet of his, it was in great condition and great quality so I was happy to use it. Also because it meant I didn’t have to piece a backing! I machine bound the quilt with some of the burgundy scraps. I love using up every bit of fabric I can with a quilt. I love scraps but I don’t want to have too many.

I quilted in an all over loop-de-loop with burgundy thread on top and blue thread on the bottom. This is the first quilt I’ve quilted on my new Juki TL-2010Q and it was an absolute dream. I’m still working out the thread tension (I got the burgundy thread on sale and I think that was the culprit) but overall it was a much better experience than quilting on my old Singer Confidence Quilter. I’ll still keep that one around since it has tons of computerized stitches that will be good for mending and other kinds of projects.

This quilt ended up finishing at about 62.5″x78.5″. I’m still working on cutting accurately and getting a consistent 1/4″ seam allowance so that is probably why my quilt is smaller than the pattern.

So how does Carl like it? He loves it! He’s taken more than one nap with it and in fact put it on our bed, even though it’s too small to fit all the way on there. I’m calling this one a success!

Stash Report September 23, 2018

The last couple of weeks I’ve been sharing with you some unfinished projects I’ve inherited from my mother-in-law’s friend who passed away. Here is the last of the stash.

I’m counting this as one UFO even though I think there are two separate projects here, since two are set on point and the others are squared. 5 of the six are made with batiks though so I think, with some creativity, I might be able to make these into one quilt top. I may take one or two out and make pillows with them if they end up not working, though. All of the applique on these blocks is finished and there are instructions for more blocks, but I think I’d rather do some patchwork blocks to finish out the quilt top.

Speaking of patchwork, I got all of this fabric along with the other UFOs and yardage:

These are mostly batiks and mostly eighth- to quarter-yard pieces. I did a rough measurement (by sight only) and I estimated there’s almost 13 yards of fabric here. I’d love to use these to finish out a quilt top with the batik flower applique blocks.

Used this Week: 0 yards

Used year to Date: 24 7/12 yards

Added this Week: 12 3/4 yards

Added Year to Date: 75 yards (I rounded down so I wouldn’t have weird decimals)

Net for 2018: -51 7/12 yards de-stashed

This project adds another project to my list.

  1. Quilt for C: This is the Connect Four quilt. Follow my progress on my instagram. I’ve started to sew the rows together, so a finished quilt top is in my near future.
  2. Pillow case for ME from Zelda fabric.
  3. Mike’s T-shirt quilt.
  6. Applique UFO
  7. Christmas UFO
  8. Batik Flower Applique UFO

With that, I’ve shared all the fabric bits I received from my mother-in-law’s friend. I also received a TON of rulers and patterns. I’m giving most of those away since I have a lot rulers already and the patterns aren’t really my style.

Stash Report September 16, 2018

On my last stash report, I shared one of the unfinished projects a friend of my mother-in-law’s left behind when she passed away. Here is another one:

It’s a charming applique Christmas quilt. When I was first looking at the blocks, I didn’t realize that the letters came together to spell “Christmas,” even though it seems obvious now! I could tell that some of the blocks were unfinished (probably I don’t want a block with a bald angel!) but I didn’t get a pattern or instructions for finishing them. I decided to do some searching on Google and I managed to find the original pattern!

This Etsy shop has it listed as “Christmas Traditions felted wool appliqué wall hanging quilt pattern by Rhonda McCray for Farmhouse Threads #947 (2014) K0954.” Now that I see the finished product, hopefully I’ll be able to finish it. I thought it was interesting that she switched the Santa “S” to be a Sleigh “S,” along with some other creative changes. I’m not a big fan of the original pattern’s borders so I will make some of my own changes. I think I will sash the blocks with a dark green fabric and do a border around the blocks with the same fabric. I might do a pieced border after that and then another solid border to increase the size. I plan on giving this to my mother for Christmas, I think she’d really love it.

I’m not counting these pieces as “yardage” coming into my stash, and these pieces didn’t come with coordinating fabrics. Once I decide to finish the quilt I’ll have to buy some fabrics and I will count the incoming yardage then.

Stash Report September 9, 2018

This week I got an amazing gift from my mother-in-law. A friend of hers from church passed away and she passed on some of her friend’s unfinished quilty UFOs and fabric on to me. I’m so happy to have them and I hope I can put them to good use. I’m still going through the haul so I will probably feature the finds over the next few weeks of stashes.

The first project is this beautiful pink and tan applique project. Quite a few of the fabrics remind me of the fabrics I used in my Leaves and Berries Quilt from a few years ago. I searched my stash and unfortunately don’t have any more of those fabrics left, but the UFO came with some coordinating fabrics that should work. Most of the applique is finished except for some hearts on one of the smaller blocks. My plan is to use one of the pink coordinating fabrics to border the panel in the center, then create one or two borders with the remaining fabrics. I’d like to do sashing in between the other blocks but I don’t have enough of the pink coordinating fabric and I don’t think the others would look right.

Speaking of the coordinating fabrics, here they are:

There are 2 yards of the white with pink print, 1.25 yards of the pink and 5 yards of the tan with pink print. Should be plenty to finish this one.

Stay tuned to see more of the UFOs I received from this talented quilter.

Stash Report August 26, 2018

The last shipment from the Fabric De-Stasahing group on Facebook came in.

I got 3.5 yards from the Garden Party by Studio E fabric line, plus a yard of a cute swan princess print, 3 yards of Folkstone Blue Moon Forest by Dear Stella, and 3 Yuki by Debbie Maddy for Moda Charm Packs. I want to try and make this Singing the Blues quilt by Moda Bake Shop with the Yuki Charm packs. The others… well I just couldn’t pass them up!

I didn’t get anything finished this week, but the Connect Four quilt is coming along. I’ve got all the blocks assembled, now I just need to put the top together.

In addition to getting a ton of fabric in the mail, I also got this!

All set up in my little sewing nook.

Our cat Yoda is keeping an eye on her!

I got a Juki TL-2010Q as part of a Massdrop. I ended up saving about 35% off the list price, I’ve rarely seen these discounted that deeply so I’m pretty happy with the price. I can’t wait to start sewing on it!

Used year to Date: 24 7/12 yards

Added this Week: 10 yards

Added Year to Date: 54 1/12 yards

I can’t believe I’ve added so much fabric to my stash this year. Really must do more to get fabric out than in!! My to-do list has added another item… the quilt with the Yuki charm packs.

  1. Quilt for C: This is the Connect Four quilt. Follow my progress on my instagram.
  2. Pillow case for ME from Zelda fabric.
  3. Mike’s T-shirt quilt. I may make another t-shirt quilt first so I can practice on shirts that have less sentimental value to me before I risk making a mistake on these shirts.

See you next week hopefully with finishes and no new additions!!

Stash Report August 19, 2018

More fabric incoming from the Fabric De-Stashing group on Facebook! I have cut myself off from buying anything else so incoming fabric should start slowing down. Also, I have started the Connect Four quilt so hopefully I will have a finish for that soon and be able to show some big movement on my numbers.

Here is some new fabric from the Fabric De-Stashing group… this adorable vintage Disney movie poster print. There’s about 3/4 yard here.

I also made a hankerchief for my boyfriend from the Zelda fabric I got in a couple of weeks ago, and cut into the leftovers for his Connect Four quilt, so I’ll go ahead and count that out this week.

Used this Week: 1/4 yards

Used year to Date: 24 7/12 yards

Added this Week: 3/4 yards

Added Year to Date: 44 1/12 yards

My to-do list is getting smaller!

  1. Quilt for C: This is the Connect Four quilt. If you follow me on Instagram you know I’ve already started on this!
  2. Pillow case for ME from Zelda fabric.
  3. Mike’s T-shirt quilt. I may make another t-shirt quilt first so I can practice on shirts that have less sentimental value to me before I risk making a mistake on these shirts.

Stash Report August 12, 2018

Here are my numbers this week, with a finish under my belt! Unfortunately/Fortunately (depending on how you look at it!) the last quilt I made was mostly made of fabric scraps from my scraps bucket, which have already been counted as OUT fabric so they don’t get to count again (darn). Pretty much the only fabric I pulled from my stash for the last fabric was used on the backing and binding.

This week I also discovered the Fabric De-Stashing group on Facebook… BEWARE! It is extremely addicting to buy fabric there! This week alone I bought all of this…

One yard of the bottom four, then 1.5 yards, then a Superman panel I plan on putting on the back of the quilt I’m making of my late husband’s t-shirts. He loved Superman so when I saw it I knew it would be perfect for the backing.

Two yards of each of these… I love the black and white triangles! And the soft green with the little tee pees is adorable.

Used this Week: 3 1/3 yds

Used year to Date: 24 1/3 yards

Added this Week: 10 yards

Added Year to Date: 43 1/3 yards

Net for 2018: -19 yards de-stashed

Oh my gosh, I’m so far in the red!! Should I even bother keeping track any more?? lol!

My to-do list is getting smaller!

  1. Quilt for C: I have decided on a pattern from a book & bought the fabric.
  2. Hankie for C from Zelda fabric.
  3. Pillow case for ME from Zelda fabric.
  4. Mike’s T-shirt quilt. I may make another t-shirt quilt first so I can practice on shirts that have less sentimental value to me before I risk making a mistake on these shirts.
  5. The Lattice quilt tutorial when I pre-ordered the ombre confetti jelly roll from V and Co.

Meet Cute Quilt Finish

Another finish under the belt!

This is the Meet Cute Quilt by the Moda Bake Shop Blog. I’ll admit I had some troubles with this one. I tried to be very vigilant about maintaining a quarter inch seam allowance but even so, I had trouble getting the blocks to be the same size. And the blocks ended up being rectangles instead of squares, which made joining them together difficult. It is very colorful though and perfect for a baby. It finished at 52″ square.

I feel a little bad about how late this quilt is. I ended up using a lot of scraps from my scraps bin and about a third of a yard of fabric from my stash for the piecing. The backing was all from my stash, about 3 yards. I had a lot of backing left over actually so I used that to make the binding. I originally planned on having a white binding but I like how the blue turned out. It makes the quilt look a little more boyish.

Here’s a close-up of the fabric on the back. I had this cute Mickey fabric laying around that ended up being perfect for the amount I needed to make the backing just a smidge bigger.

Feels great to have this one done. On to the next!

Stash Report July 22, 2018

Still no quilt finishes under my belt, so no fabric out this week. But boy, sure do have some fabric IN…

From left to right:

  1. 0.833 yd of a cute Parisian themed fabric. My boyfriend’s daughter loves all things Paris so I thought I might try to make something out of it for her.
  2. 1 2/3 yd of this cute triangle fabric. It was actually two remnants, a yard and 2/3 yd. It looks like a cute baby quilt backing or something.
  3. 2/3 yd of this awesome Zelda stained glass fabric! I think I want to make a pillow case of of it for myself. My boyfriend requested a hankie from it, too.
  4. 4.5 yds of this pretty Kona Burgundy fabric. I’m going to use this to make the Connect Four quilt from Country Girl Modern.

That’s a total of

Used this Week: 0 yards

Used year to Date: 20.985 yards

Added this Week: 7.667 yards

Added Year to Date: 33.354 yards

Net for 2018: -12.369 yards de-stashed

oops, way back in the red!
